With Urban in race Holden easily retains seat
So, Luzerne County Council member, past Luzerene County Commissioner, past candidate for Lieutenant Governor, former Republican now Democrat (I think there are a few more) Steve Urban is thinking about running for Congress (chuckle).
This past week, Dave Yonki of LuLac broke this.  Here is what the Yonk had to say:  “That restless political cowboy Steve Urban Senior is looking again to try for another political office. My sources tell me it’s for the job he’s always wanted U.S. Congress. Urban has had his eye on that seat for a long time since he moved back to the area. Urban’s friends (and yes he does have a few) under the Dome are circulating petitions for his run in the new 17th Congressional district. Incumbent Tim Holden and Moosic attorney Matt Cartwright are also in the race.” Read More ...

Cindy Vough may challenge Mundy in the 120th
For the past four months we’ve been hearing rumblings Cindy Vough, newly elected Judge Mike Vough’s wife, might be throwing her hat in the ring for State Representative.  If in, she’ll be squaring off against long time incumbent Phyllis Mundy of the 120th.
We also heard some rumblings her nomination petitions have been circulating.
Not sure if Cindy Vough plans on entering the fray as a Democrat or Republican.
While Mundy faced two competitors two years ago, Bill Goldsworhty and Tim Mullen, she was still able to grab more than 50% of the vote making her tough to beat. Read More ...

Law & code seem to be on Klush's side in lawsuit
As many of you may know Attorney Cynthia Pollick has filed suit against Pittston City and Mayor Jason Klush on behalf of former Pittston City Chief of Police Jeffrey Tayoun.
According to the Times Leader, Tayoun “contends he was unfairly demoted and retaliated against because he reported former officer Robert Semyon to the Attorney General’s Office for allegedly taking sexually explicit photographs of unconscious women who were in police custody.” Read More ...

West Pittston took a devastating blow last year with the flooding and many are concerned with its future.
As you drive through the streets of the once beautiful Garden Village, you see vacant businesses along with houses for sale touting “make reasonable offer.”

We lose a true journalist and a friend
Ever since I can remember, the first thought that came to mind when one said Greater Pittston journalism was Dick Cosgrove.
As most of you know, we lost Mr. Cosgrove this past week at the age of 87.
Over the years, I have heard many give reporters (me included) tongue lashings saying they weren’t fair and or bias..
During those years, however, never once did ever I witness anyone take exception to what Mr. Cosgrove penned.

Last week we wrote Wyoming Area minority board member John Bolin said the Board may have violated the   Sunshine Law because it never disclosed an executive session that was not advertised.  In this case, it should have been announced at the next public meeting.
Well, Board President Frank Cassarealla disclosed the executive session at this past meeting.

WA approves junket while it contemplates closing Sara Dymond

So let me get this straight.  At this past Wyoming Area Board meeting, because the district is in such serious financial straights, they talked about potentially closing down the Sara Dymond elementary school in Harding.
At the same meeting, the board approved to send themselves to a School Board junket in State College.
John Bolin and John Marrianci voted no while Frank Cassarella, Estelle Campennni, Deanna Farrell, Mary Louise Degnan, Beth Gober-Mangan, Carl Yorina and Gil Dominick voted yes.

Friday afternoon, Holden paid a visit to Jimmy Dennis at his shop in Exeter. I missed him by just a few minutes.
Like I wrote a few weeks ago, this new district is ripe for a candidate for someone from Luzerne or Lackawanna Counties.
While no one has officially announced, Lackawanna County Attorney, Matt Cartwright has been rumored to be running.
This race could be quite interesting considering the amount of Democratic registrations in the two counties.

Besides a hiring policy or nepotism, there are big issues facing Pittston Area – real big issues.
First and foremost, balancing the budget.
A few years back the board made a bold move by contracting the food service out to a private contractor.
To date, its one of the best financial moves the district ever made.  And, to the best of my knowledge, there have been no serious issues with feeding the children.

Mr. Cosgrove leaves a mess in Chambers

   No class.
That’s the best way I can sum up former Luzerne County Judge Joe Cosgorve’s exit this past Friday.
As five new judges were donning their new digs (court room and chambers) to family, friends and supporters, newly appointed Judge Mike Vough had to deal with the mess Joe Cosgorve’s left including a cluttered desk, pictures of Martin Sheen,  boxes that filled his chambers and support staff that stayed behind.
Yes, with the exception of Mike Vough, the newly elected judges were moved in and personalized their individual chambers.  For example, Fred Pierantoni had his chambers personalized with his coal mining obsession complete with photos and replicas of Valley mines.
   Not Mike Vough.

BREAKING NEWS: PA Board spins repeal, folks ain't buyin' it

The Pittston Area Board can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig.
The Board majority Tuesday night lead by President Tony Guariglia, insulted my intelligence, the media’s intelligence, but most of all, insulted the taxpayers’ and residents’ intelligence when they tried to justify and spin their way out of last week’s appeal of the district’s hiring policy.
I don’t even think I could give them a grade of a D- with the dog and pony show they tried to put on.
As you know the new board majority, last week at the reorganization meeting, repealed their existing hiring policy.  Clearly a political move to stick it to minority member Bob Liinskey.

It was deadlocked in Wyoming Area’s executive backroom session Wednesday night and no one was chosen to fill their solicitor’s spot.
And, it was a complete waste of time and a circle jerk for the candidates who didn’t make the final cut.  I hope the board majority plans on reimbursing Attorney Charles Coslett for the flight he took when the board cut his vacation short for his interview.  While he was selected as one of the final three, it was just a ruse to masquerade what the new board majority will deem transparent.

WA Solicitor says "no transparency" in interview process

by Ray Hassey, Esq

I would like to start off first by saying that the past 12 years as Solicitor of the Wyoming Area School District have been the most rewarding years of my professional career.  Having the opportunity to serve my home community, and the people I live with, go to church with and see in the grocery store daily has been a privilege that few get to enjoy, and I am grateful for the opportunity.  School Boards, by their nature, are very political. It has truly been a study in human nature to observe the interaction among the various board members over the years.  As an attorney, and not an elected official, one of my roles has been to be the professional  voice of reason, the ethical voice to try to counter the tendency of every board member, no matter how pious they present themselves publicly, to sink to the dark side of human nature, and to act contrary to their own good judgment.

New Pittston Area majority takes first black eye

   Dumb and unprepared.
That would be the best way to sum up the Pittston Area board majority rescinding the new hiring policy at the reorganization meeting this past week.
First, this was politics.  No doubt about it.  It was meant to stick it to Bob Linskey where the sun don’t shine mainly because of the federal lawsuit he recently filed.  And, I have no gripe with that.
Dumb, yes. The incoming board members barely know where the restrooms are and they’re repealing policies?

Ferrantino names surfaces for DA in 4 years
There’s already speculation of who may challenge incoming District Attorney Stephanie Salavantis four years from now.
One name that has surfaced quite a few times during my rounds is Jarret Ferrantino and I like that.  He is currently an assistant DA.
I’ve know Jarrett for quite a few years and he’s the salt the earth.
Next, it would be nice for Greater Pittston to reclaim that seat in four years.
My thought is that if he’s no longer is in that office as an ADA once Salavantis is sworn in, Ferrantino will start to get his ducks in line. Read More ...

Pittston Area re-organizes

“I’m now going to turn the meeting over to the vice president, thank you and it’s been nice serving all of you,” were Terry Best’s final words as President, and Board member of the Pittston Area Board, as he exited with grace and a touch of class.
As predicted last week Tony Guarglia was appointed president and ran his first meeting like a fine tuned machine.
   Other appointments were as follows
   Vice-President – Dr. Ross Latona

With Pittston Area reorganizing this Thursday, expect some changes.
While many would like to see top vote getter Charlie Sciandra take the reins and be the next President of the Board, he won’t.  He needs at least a year to get his feet wet before he’s ready for that task.
You’ll most likely see veteran board member Tony Guargilia take the reins as President.  Guarigilia has been past over while he was top vote getter in past elections.  But right now he’s well seasoned and makes the most since.

First, there’s a lot of speculation and gamesmanship being played right now of who will be tabbed as Wyoming Area’s solicitor.
First, I don’t think sitting solicitor Ray Hassey has any plans on going anywhere.  Whether he can round up the necessary five votes is yet to seen.
We understand there are nine in the running.  We only know of six.  Including Hassey, they are Mike Butera, Vito DeLuca, Jarrett Ferantino, Harry Skene and Brian Corcoran.

POLL: Is Linskey justified with his federal lawsuit?
Last week we wrote how Tony Rostock, Billy Balchune and Red Paterson all got a piece of Bob Linskey and his lawsuit at 2011’s final meeting.
There weren’t many postings supporting Linskey.
As we wrote, this will be a long drawn out process.  Even if the new incoming board majority puts Linskey back on as the LIU representative, the suit will continue.
   Why, you may ask.
While I didn’t read the actual complaint, news reports say the suit was filed because his civil rights were violated and asks for an unspecified amount of money for punitive damages.
And, knowing Bob Linskey is the most qualified accountant in Luzerne County, he clearly understands when all this is added up it equals “cha-ching,” a payday for Bob Linskey.”

Then it was former board member and the Monte Hall of the East Side Tony Rostock’s turn.
He asked how could the board take a guy (Atty Mark Singer) who has been doing this for 16 years and is an intelligent man off the LIU board?

One of my biggest frustrations over the years is in getting clarity in reporting on the sometimes large sums of money paid my firm in election campaigns.
I do not make the total amount of the funds disclosed. For example, Jackie Musto Carroll paid me $50,000 in her DA's race.  Most of that money did not go into my pockets. It went to TV stations to buy advertising. I netted a small commission on it. Still, most of the time this is reported as if it all is a fee paid totally to me.

Its the 65% outside the bubble Jackie should be concnered with
For those who have been following the Luzerne County District Attorney’s race, there are two contingencies you have to look at - those inside the bubble and those not.
Those inside the bubble clearly see through Stephanie Salavantis’s ruse.  They clearly understand Salavantis has zero, and I mean zero, experience.  In fact we hear ”God bless this county if she wins.”

Musto-Carroll shouldn't ignore 800 pound guerrilla in the room

The way I see it, any election in Luzerne County comes down to one issue – scandals.
And, Stephanie Salavantis has done a good job at portraying Jackie Musto-Carroll as being knee deep in the Kids for Cash scandal.
Salavantis’s commercials (TV and Radio) hit on only one issue, the judicial scandal.  While they may be a bit quirky, they are very well produced and catch your attention.
And, while Jackie probably had a comfortable lead of 24 points in her poll a few weeks ago, my thought with the amount of money Salavantis is throwing at it, that number has dwindled to less than five.

Over the years, there is one thing I have been consistent on – hypocrisy in politics.  The do as I say not as I do really rubs me the wrong way.
Keeping that in mind, I have received a few emails, calls and posts about the possibility of Pittston Area School Director Tony Guariglia taking a position at the Wilkes Barre Vo-Tech.  Not really sure of the position.  It could be the janitor for all I know.
What the scuttlebutt is - Tony recently resigned his position as Pittston Area’s rep to the Vo-Tech Board and was appointed to replace Bob Linskey at the LIU.

Vinsko tops in Congressional fundraising

First time candidate, and Democratic Candidate for Congress in the 11th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, Bill Vinsko, raised $84,972.16 in the Third Quarter of 2011, after filing the Federal Election Commission paperwork on July 21, 2011.  Of the $84,972.16, $80,144.00 was from individual contributions, the most of any candidate or incumbent in all of Northeast Pennsylvania.  Vinsko has not solicited any donations from any Wall Street Banks, has not had to take out any loans, and shows no debt in the Campaign.

WA A Plus ticket holds rally, things quite on the West Side
With my new shinny camera in hand, I attended Wyoming Area’s A Plus (Campenni, Degnan, Gober-Mangan & Yorina) rally this past week at Gober’s in Exeter.
I was snapping photos feverishly only to find out I had no memory card.
As you know, photos tell a thousand words and it saves me a ton of aggravation and trouble of listing all in attendance.
I don’t know what it is, but my readers love perusing those photo buckets. Who’s with whom; who’s supporting whom; who’s courting whom; who’s walking whom around; who wants their picture taking with whom…I could go on and on but there’s nothing like a good ole photo to describe the event.

Salavantis comes out swinging in Jackie's backyard

The District Attorney race is starting to heat up with Jackie Musto-Carroll and challenger Stephanie Salavantis.  Salavantis came out swinging this past week with some decent radio and TV ads.
I saw Salavantis’s initial ad which was kinda blasé and boring.  Then, Saturday afternoon I heard one of her radio ads – ouch!
Then I found a 30 second TV commercial on YouTube.
All I can say is - yikes!

Petrilla's golden parachute, lines up her ducks for 2012
Soon to be out of a job, sitting County Commissioner Maryanne Petrilla’s name has surfaced again.
Please recall we wrote in this corner a few weeks back, Petrilla along with Red O’Brien and Jimmy Haddock were lobbying for a job at the LCTA (Luzerne County Transit Authority) as its Human Resource Director.
First, we heard Haddock was delivered the bad news from a local board member he would be passed over.   He was, however, told there would be an assistant position created and he’d be considered for that.

PA Board & Solicitor need to protect district from potential liability
A Luzerne County Intermediate (LIU) board member has confirmed Pittston Area Board member Bob Linskey went to the last LIU meeting and informed the LIU board he plans on filing suit against the Pittston Area Board for his removal.
Please recall last week we reported Linskey’s attorney has sent a demand letter to the district.  We’re not exactly sure if a letter was sent.
We also heard Attorney Cinthia Pollick was retained by Linskey.  She did returned our call last week and left voice mail stating she wasn’t sure what my call was about but doesn’t disclose any information for any of her clients until it is actually public.
Keeping this all in mind, if a demand letter was sent and just an inkling of Linskey planning on filing suit against the district, the board needs to take action to protect the district. Read More ...

WP inspections continue to be questioned

WP inspections continue to be questioned
By Laura Dennis, Esq
In the weeks that have followed our flood ravaged towns, more questions continue to be raised about permits and payments in West Pittston.   There still seems to be great confusion about who has to have permits, why they have to have them and most questionably, who is allowed to provide the inspections once the work is finished.
I want  the readers to know that in addition to practicing real estate law, I have personally taken on remodeling at least nine properties over the past few years, including my present law office  and another one I will be opening in the late fall. I thoroughly enjoy design and I certainly understand and appreciate the importance of safe properties. I have worked with many Code enforcement officials and Borough inspectors and respect their positions.  At no time, do I expect anyone to operate without the goal of ultimate safety when it comes to the public and especially for people paying for their services.
I was contacted at my law office last week by Representative Phyllis Mundy after my Editoral appeared in the Sunday Dispatch and here, at Pittston Politics.  The Representative and I discussed the terms of the contract between the inspector and the Borough and concerns we both had regarding the propriety of those terms.  My main problem with this contract is the direct link between payment to the inspector and the amount of work required to be done on your home.

Vough hosts golf tournament
What would a campaign season be without a golf tournament?
Candidate for County Judge Mike Vough hosted a golf tournament this past week at Blue Ridge Golf Club where all had a great time.
I had the pleasure of playing with the future jurist along with our good friends Tom Burke and Jim Zarra.
All had a great time and it was a nice break after Vough, Burke and I were flooded out a couple of weeks ago.
Jim Zarra performed his patented pre-roll routine but our seven under wasn’t enough to finish in the money.  Read More ...

Candidate for Luzerne County Judge Fred Pierantoni held his cocktail party at Kevin’s in Kingston this past week.
I ended up in the ER Sunday night so I was unable to attend.  No need to worry, I’m fine.
Anyway, Fred, Jr., took some photos and as you can see from the photo bucket, it was very well attended.

Tea Party unhappy with Barletta
EDITOR'S NOTE:  The following appeared in PoliticsPA.com this past week
By Sari Heidenreich, PoliticsPA.com
The Northeast Pennsylvania Tea Party is in the midst of launching a campaign against Congressmen Tom Marino (R-Lycoming) and Lou Barletta (R-Luzerne) for their support of legislation that would create tax incentives and subsidies to encourage the use and production of natural gas vehicles.
“We were fans of [Rep.]Barletta and [Rep.]Marino,” said NEPA Tea Party leader Bob Orbin. “And it’s disappointing to see them backing these types of plans whey they say they back the free market.”
A robocall was launched in Barletta’s district on Tuesday and to date there have been 10,000 targeted calls to Republicans & Independents. Orbin said they plan to start calls in the 10th district by next week and are looking to place half-page ads in local newspapers to “notify people of just what’s happening.”

Linskey loses LIU seat, Latona draws line in the sand
If you don’t know by now, Pittston Area Board member Robert Linskey was removed as the Luzerne County Intermediate (LIU) representative at the last meeting.
Please recall over the summer there was quite of bit of jockeying who the actual rep would be.  The board took a vote on the open floor on one hand, but on the other, the board members cast their vote via paper ballot.
I believe Linskey received the necessary five votes on the open floor while two months earlier Mark Singer received five votes via written ballot. Read More ...
