Summer of recovery a bust, gold prices skyrocket

If you think this is the summer of recovery, think again.  It’s going to get a lot worse before it gets better
This past week I was in Florida.   A good friend of mine and I went into a gold and coin dealer shop - very similar to Jimmy Dennis’s shop.
The owner told us something that kinda scared the hell out of me.
He said that a national gold dealer stopped by looking for inventory – gold.  Not gold jewelry, but gold bullion, specifically gold coins.  What actually scared me is that the national dealer was willing to pay above the going rate.
He also said this person was making his way down the Florida West coast going shop to shop. Read More ...

Last year Mike Aufiere along with John LaNunziata won a double nomination but lost in the general to two Independent candidates – Gil Dominick and Frank Cassarella.

With Rome's atty, its about the egregious fees
This past week I finally figured out why Attorney Cynthia Pollick (Tom Rome’s attorney) subpoenaed me to testify in the federal civil rights lawsuit against Pittston Area.
   CASH!
Yep, she wants your hard earned green back. I’ll get to that later.
You see, while some may think it’s a crime for what Pollick does, one could easily figure out its sorta legalized extortion.
First, let me say I am absolutely in Tom Rome’s corner with his suit against Pittston Area and other district officials.
Next, Pollick got spanked this past week by US District Judge Caputo.  Yes, a federal judge threw out the case she filed against County Deputy Ryan Foy and the county. Read More ...

Since our spring “Blogfest” was such a success, fellow blogger Gort and I have decided to do a fall “Blogfest.
Yes, bloggers from throughout NEPA will be in attendance and this will be another chance to meet the faces behind the computer.
It will be again held at Rooney’s Irish Pub on Main Street in Pittston on Friday, September 17th starting at 5:30.
There will be another special treat.  Starting at 8:30 singer songwriter Lisa Bodnar will be performing.
We have adopted Lisa’s song “Come Hell or High Water” as our theme with our “Kitchen Table Politics” videos.
Many of you told me you really like her music and have asked about her.  Well, this will be your opportunity to put a face with the music. Read More ...

Good news for some, bad news for others
I have good news for some this week and bad news for others.
First the good news – for those who have complained that I should have my priorities in order because I play in my weekly golf league on Tuesdays instead of attending school board meetings, I lost in the playoffs consequently no more golf league.  That means I’ll be attending the monthly meetings
Now the bad news – for those politicians who were happy as a pig in mud because I had golf leagues on Tuesday’s prohibiting me from attending the monthly board meeting, I lost in the plays and now I’ll be attending.
Yes, it’ll be back to business as usual.
I’ll be sure to come early, bring my video camera and get great videos of board presidents Mark Singer and John Bolin.

“I’ve voted with her 95% of the time, why is she (Valenti) bustin’ my nuts now, “ John Bolin mumbled under his breath at this past Wyoming Area Board meeting.
It looks like my video camera missed one of those finer moments in Wyoming Area politics.
Reports have it that there was some controversy and a stale mate over some transportation issues.
At issue was the retention of three bus transportation drivers one of which was Jimmy Dennis’s sister.
Toni Valenti along with Estelle Campenni, Nick DeAngelo and Sam Aritz wanted to terminate the agreement and contract it out.  They contended this would have resulted in an annual savings of $22,000. Read More ...

Pittston Area federal lawsuit gets a bit bizzare
The federal lawsuit involving Pittston Area employee Tommy Rome gets more bizarre as time goes on.
First, we understand that behind closed doors the board is asking “What are Rome’s demands?”
“That’s a good question” we are told the response was.
It seems Rome’s Attorney, Cynthia Pollick, is “mums the word” on what exactly are her client’s damages.

While Mike Aufiere lost his bid for the Wyoming Area board last year, I think he did learn a few things.
One might even think Aufiere sought out political counsel from former GOP boss Gary DelSerra who always said, “Every time I lose, I learn how to win.”
With that, we hear Aufiere is seeking support from the PSEA in his bid next year.

For the past year or so I’ve been asked many times about my position on “Home Rule.”
Quite honestly I thought it would never make it out of committee and onto the ballot.
The committee, however, has proved me wrong and has drawn up a Charter.
I have only read news accounts of the Charter and have not read it in detail.

Attorney George Shovlin has been removed as legal counsel from the Pittston City Redevelopment Authority concerning Wayne’s World located on North Main Street.
This came to light after I submitted a Right to Know Request to the Redevelopment Authority and Attorney Chester Dudick responded to the request asking for a 30 day extension.
“This is just for this property (Wayne’s World),” Dudick said.
When asked why, Dudick responded, “Goerge’s schedule was busy.”
He said this was a board decision and he was appointed at the last meeting.
Board member Mike Lombardo (the former Mayor) echoed Dudick’s response saying, “George has a lot on his plate so we decided to appoint Attorney Dudick.”
Shovlin did not return a call to his office.

Dear Phyllis,
Since an informed electorate is vital to a successful election process, I am taking this opportunity to challenge you to a series of three (3) debates.  I believe these debates will educate the voters on our respective positions for the important issues facing the Luzerne County and the 120th House District.
In order to allow the time necessary to schedule and work out the details of these debates, I suggest an RSVP deadline of Friday, August 20, 2010.  This will allow you plenty of opportunity to check your schedule for available dates so we can begin this process immediately.

WEST SIDE: State Rep race, catching up, golf & Danny D
It’s been awfully quite on the West Side.
While West Pittston Mayor Bill Goldsworthy is challenging State Phyllis Mundy, there is really no excitement in the air.
I promised Mundy back in the spring that I would give her an opportunity to sit down at the kitchen table and we both agree it should be done in the fall.
Also, the talk on the street is how will Tim Mullen, the Libertarian candidate, will affect this race.
CATCHING UP
This past week I enjoyed a few adult beverages along with some Lonza and Provolone cheese with Bob Steinberger, Jimmy Dennis, John Bolin and Dave “Buttons” Alberigi.
Buttons was kind enough to act as the host.  We were actually hoping to get a game of pitch going, but talking politics and football seem to occupy the evening.
PLAYING GOLF WITH MIKE KARCUTSKIE
I had had the pleasure to enjoy a round of golf with Mike Karcutskie on Saturday at Fox Hill.

Don’t ask what he got on the next hole.
JUST APOLOGIZE

City made the right decision, how they got there is another story
This past week we learned quite a bit about the workings of City government after researching the Wayne’s World debacle.
First and foremost, the Pittston City Redevelopment Authority is completely autonomous from Pittston City.
I was always under the impression that the Redevelopment Authority fell under the jurisdiction of City Council – not true.
You see, while most of you were blaming council and the mayor for the cluster on Main Street, it was actually the Redevelopment Authority who dropped the ball.

Looking at PA Board race for next year
We’re not hearing much about the line up for next year’s Pittston Area School Board election.
There will be four openings: Terry Best, Tony Guariglia, Mark Singer and Mike McAndrew.
One I am fairly confident will not seek re-election is Mike McAndrew.
McAndrew was going to resign after the arrests of Joe Oliveri and Ross Scarantino so it’s probably a sure thing he won’t seek a second term.
That’s too bad.  While McAndrew is fairly quite at the meetings, I think everyone will agree he has the kids’ best interest at heart.
Right now I’m going to say there is a 50% chance Terry Best will not seek election as well.  With Best off the board, however, this will leave a void for an independent voice.
Some, however, will be jumping for joy with Terry out including Red O’Brien.

This bet came after much debate at a blogger roundup this past week in Plains.
Gort says the Democrats will hold the US House of Representatives after the general election.
I, however, think its 1994 all over again and the Republicans will take control of the House.
Both of us feel the Dems will continue to hold the Senate.
Next came the deliberation.  What are the stakes?

New plans for "Stauffer Star"
The “Stauffer Star”, an historic symbol of the Greater Pittston Area for more than 50 years, has a new home. A group of students from the Pittston Area chapter of the National Honor Society are taking the 30 foot star, erected in the 50’s by Roy Stauffer, to  the Pittston Area High School, where they will sand, paint and relight it.
Roy Stauffer, born in 1896, was a wealthy businessman who owned several car dealerships in West Pittston and Scranton. He built his home at the 800 foot elevation of Stauffer Point so that he could have a perfect view of Greater Pittston, and the surrounding areas. The "Back Room Deal" that didn't happen in WA
To much of my surprise, sitting Superintendent Ray Bernardi did not walk out of Tuesday night’s meeting with a new contract.
That’s not to say some in the back room didn’t try.  We thought for sure, considering the 18 teaching jobs that were handed out, Toni Valenti would have been able to finagle a deal to land Bernardi a three year extension.
Here are a couple theories of what could have happened in the back room.
One, Valenti was fairly confident she had Gil Dominick.  She also thought her new found friendship with Estelle Campenni would have paid off as well.
Neither happened – Campenni nor Dominick stepped up to the plate.

by Robert Lampman,
Guest Columnist
A few weeks ago it was written on this site that some of the Pittston Area School Directors were going to bring to the floor a vote to have a no smoking policy on all Pittston Area School District properties. I for one also questioned the board as to the benefits of this policy.
First of all the district would save money in health care by having a smoke free campus.
Secondly it just might help some of the employees that do smoke that want to quite actually have to stop smoking. In turn it would cut down on absenteeism and a better health environment overall.
Mr. Singer our Board President told me he would send out a survey asking the people that smoke if they were interested in this new policy. This is the kind of stuff that makes my Irish blood boil.   He said that he didn't want to create a hostile working environment. So last month I was eagerly waiting to hear the results of this survey. I was like a kid waiting on a hot summer day for Joey the Dairy King to pass by my house. However, I was told by Dr. Latona who was also pushing for this new policy that they were waiting to hear from the teachers union as to weather or not they would approve such a policy and that it would be passed during the May meeting. Read More ...

Right to Know request denied, WA directors in the dark
It looks like four of the nine Wyoming Area School Directors are like mushrooms.
   Why, you may ask.
   Here’s Wikapidia’s definition:
“Mushroom Management is an allusion to a company's staff being treated like mushrooms: kept in the dark, covered with dung, and – when grown big enough – canned. The connotation is that the management is making decisions without consulting the staff affected by those decisions – and possibly not even informing the staff until well after such decisions are made.”
In this instance, however, the staff is keeping board members in the dark.

Kanjo's Chief of Staff a breath of fresh air
You’ll be hard pressed to find someone that actually impresses me inside the beltway.
That was up until this past couple of months.
Karen Feather, Congressman Paul Kanjorski’s Chief of Staff is a modest person.  I caught up with her a couple of months ago in DC and again at a rally held at Sabitinni’s Pizza for Tom Leighton and Kanjorksi.
When I was about to snap a group photo which she would have been in at the rally, it was quite obvious she was not about seeking the spotlight and quietly moved out of sight. Read More ...

Exeter Mayor Cassandra Coleman held a private intimate affair for Leighton and Congressman Paul Kanjorski at Sabatinni’s Pizza in Exeter.
With about three dozen in attendance, all the towns on the West Side were well represented.

With No. 29, who will be 30; West Side coming up squeaky clean
With the arrest of former Jenkins Twp Supervisor Russ Arnone, it should be noted PittstonPolitics.com was the first to break the story.
As with past stories, the daily newspapers quickly followed.
We actually knew about this on the Friday before he resigned.  We didn’t run anything, however, because we needed to confirm it with a few other sources.
Arnone makes 29.  I was asked who will be number 30.
My thought it will be another from the east side. Read More ...

Bolin & Coleman look to grab seat on State Committee
I came across these handout cards at the rallies I attended last week.  It has the Luzerne County endorsed candidates for State Committee.
That, however, isn’t sitting to well with some in our area.
As you can see, the endorsed candidates names are crossed out and Bolin and Coleman are written in.
Hey that rhymes – Bolin & Coleman.
Anyway, Wyoming Area Board President John Bolin and Exeter Mayor Cassandra Coleman are both running for State Committee.
We should keep this in mind when we head to the ballot box on Tuesday.

BREAKING NEWS: Jenkins Twp Super resigns, may have ties to fed investigation
It looks like another one bites the dust in Luzerne County.
This time, however, it’s a Republican
Russ Arnone has submitted his resignation as a Jenkins Twp Supervisor.  He was also a former Luzerne County employee.
We have received reports this may involve the ongoing federal investigation surrounding Luzerne County.
Arnone has been a Supervisor in Jenkins for the past two decades.
This may involve much of the new development in Jenkins.

Greater Pittston probably leaning Leighton

Greater Pittston probably leaning Leighton
Many have been asking me to handicap the Senate race between State Representative John Yudichak and Wilkes-Barre Mayor Tom Leighton.
While I have no horse in this race, allow me to opine.
It seems that Yudichak has some decent support in Greater Pittston.  With Ree Ree DeLuca along with Mike Aufiure and Phil Gianfarcaro hosting intimate gatherings for him, there does seem to be a decent grass roots movement.
The one thing I have noticed, however, is that I hear more negatives about Yudichak than Leighton.
From being a career politician to being an inside the beltway type of guy, Yudichak’s negatives seem to overshadow what he brings to the table, experience.

DeAngelo's daughter takes exception to bloggers' comments
EDITOR’S NOTE:  The following is a post from Daniella DeAngelo in response to some bloggers comments from last week (click here to view)  She is WA Board Member Nick DeAngelo’s daughter.  It appeared late in the week so it did not receive much exposure.  Consequently, to be fair, I am running it in its entirety this week.  Please keep in mind I have not edited it for content and appears as written.
This whole article is beyond benign. Hey pizzagirl, let's talk. Along with watchdog, and blondie. Who's concern is it anyway, to which a family member was brought into an association higher than probably your pay or salary for that matter?  Just because it's a board member's daughter who got the position does not give any of you or anyone else the right to run your mouths about it. So what if the daughter had gotten the job? What if it wasn't any of the board members who had gotten the daughter that job, Read More ...

CORRUPTION: To make evil, to bribe or taint.
by Bob Lampman
Over the last year of so we have all seen this word more often than we care to. When this word is followed by a personal name we sometimes  act surprised and sometimes we don't. Why is that?
Do we accept the fact that corruption is a way of life in our area? Do we accept the fact that if a person is holding or trying to get elected that they are corrupt?

Sweet heart WA contract will cost over $500K, sets precedence
How would you like an annual raise of $7280 with no co-pay on your health insurance?
   Not a bad deal.
Well, that’s exactly what the Wyoming Area School Board awarded full-time support staff employees at this past board meeting.
The support staff will receive a $3.50 raise per hour over five years:  $1 an hour the first year retro active to last year; 90 cents an hour the second year (this year); 70 cents an hour the third year and 45 cents an hour in the fourth and fifth year.
If someone makes $15 an hour, which is probably at the top of the scale, that equates to 4.3% per year / 21% over the term of the contract. Read More ...

Heeee's back...
When former Wyoming Area Board member John LaNunziata lost last year two things came to mind.
One, the district rid a tyrant.  And two, I might be short on material in the years to come.
Well, both of those scenarios did not happen.
We have confirmed with several that LaNunziata was at the board meeting.
One report said, “LaNunziata was walking around the school like he owned it.” Read More ...

Urban bad for the county, bad for the party
So Steve Urban wants to be Lieutenant Governor.
My first thought when I heard this was – are you kidding me?
First, if Gandhi himself ran for statewide office and held an office in Luzerne County, he’d be the laughing stock of the state.
Next, Urban has proved he has the juice always winning his seat for County Commissioner year after year.
With that, he should be the face of the Republican party in the county
But he isn’t. Read More ...

At PA: Smoking ban: Second thoughts; budget crisis
It looks like the smoking ban on school grounds in Pittston Area is in the teacher union’s lap now.
We caught up with member Bob Linskey this past week and he said the support staff union has agreed to it.  He further said they have approached the teacher’s union and are awaiting an answer
Linskey said rather than the board taking action by implementing a policy district wide, the board though it be prudent to run it by the unions first.
He said by doing it this way, the board could probably avoid any litigation costs that may arise. Read More ...

With Basil Russin stepping down as the Chief Public defender in Luzerne County, it looks like our own Mark Singer is trying to fill the void.

Toni Valenti’s, Sammy Aritz’s, Nick DeAngelo’s, Estelle Campenni’s and Dave Alberigi’s terms are up
